With the cancellation of IMEX Frankfurt due to Covid-19, the She Means Business conference was also cancelled. After all, the session "Corona crisis: Women in business and events making tough decisions" took place during the virtual IMEX on 11 May 2020.

300+ participants logged in for the session "Women in business and events making tough decisions" on Zoom, a panel of "She Means Business". The international conference on diversity, gender equality and female empowerment is a joint event of the IMEX Group and tw magazine in partnership with MPI - Meeting Professionals International. Moderated by Jessie States, Director of the MPI Academy, three female leaders shared their decisions, experiences and lessons learned during the corona crisis:

Gabriela Suhoschi, Director for World Water Week & Prizes: Due to Covid-19 Gabriela had to cancel the World Water Week 2020 of the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). The 30th edition would have taken place in Stockholm in August. Gabriela spoke about her vision for the coming year, and what the crisis could mean for the event in the years to come.

Carina Bauer, CEO of IMEX Group with two large trade show IMEX in Frankfurt and IMEX America in Las Vegas: Carina had to cancel IMEX Frankfurt due to Covid-19. She talked about the impact for her team and the industry and how IMEX picked itself up and pivoted to the online world.

Heike Mahmoud, COO CCH - Congress Center Hamburg: Heike is involved on one of Germany’s largest construction site. The CCH - Congress Center Hamburg is currently being modernized for 230 million euros and planned to open in autumn. She explained how the corona crisis influences this major project and how she and her team have to change their support to clients.

During the virtual session on Zoom, Gabriela Suhoschi, Carina Bauer and Heike Mahmoud pointed out that managing the crisis is about taking control, i.e. control of the timing. Their advice is clear: “Concentrate on the things you can control!” The three women agree that corona is a “marathon” not a “sprint”. Bauer recommends: “Stay resilient!” In the last weeks she has learned a lot about herself, i.e. “I am resilient. And my team is resilient.” As an example, she refers to the virtual IMEX, the so-called #PlanetIMEX. “We came together to see what we can do and came up with a digital event.”

Gabriela Suhoschi agrees with her: “In the crisis I learnt a lot about myself and how I deal with stress. The crisis is demanding something extra. Partnership and community matter.” In Partnership is how Heike Mahmoud is handling the situation with her customers and their bookings for 2020 and 2021. She offered three pieces of advice for the audience: Be a consultant not a sales person, offer guidance and build trust. “Women leadership is having a moment”, Carina Bauer stressed. “Women leaders in different countries are doing well in coping with the situation. It is about the emotional intelligence, transparency and ownership they show.”
