Construction work at the 4.4 sqkm Expo terrain in the southern part of Dubai near the border to Abu Dhabi has been ongoing since 2015. Even if the World Expo is located in Dubai, he emphasizes that "Expo 2020 is an Expo by the UAE for the UAE. 192 country pavilions contribute to the Expo 2020 themes. Germany chooses sustainability.

The Al-Wasl-Dome will be the Expo 2020 Dubai's central hub with a festival stage with 15,000 seats and an amphitheater with 2,500 seats. He is quite confident: "Expo 2020 will be a global convener that will spur business and trade and strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations."

This is exactly the vision that drives Steen Jakobsen at the Convention Bureau. "We are also excited about the fact that Expo 2020 Dubai will further elevate Dubai as a knowledge hub and a place where people from all over the world can gather to share innovative ideas and concepts." The Assistant Vice President of Dubai Business Events is certain: "The overarching Expo 2020 theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and the subthemes of ‘Opportunity’, ‘Mobility’ and ‘Sustainability’ all also tie in well to the messaging we are trying to communicate to the business events community: that Dubai has more than just the hygiene factors necessary to host events, but that it is also a vibrant knowledge and innovation hub that is ideal for associations, businesses and other organizations to gather groups from around the world in to be inspired and to learn and network in a vibrant environment."

He considers the Expo 2020 to be a reference to showcase Dubai as event destination. "Through its scale, Expo 2020 will amply demonstrate Dubai’s ability to host large-scale events and highlight the city’s impressive infrastructure." It is also an unrivalled opportunity for planners, who will be able to incorporate visits to the Expo 2020 site to allow delegates to explore the thematic and national pavilions or even host their own events there. Steen Jakobsen and Shaun Vorster relentlessly emphasized that at the IMEX and IBTM World tradeshows, in particular for events at the new Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC).

"All conference delegates will have full access to the 200 pavilions from countries, corporates, educational establishments and international organizations. Across events held at DEC, all the pavilions and a series of other on-site business programming and thought leadership events, there will be thousands of opportunities for business to connect to business, government to business, innovators to meet scientists, start-ups to meet investors, and so on."

More than 60 events have been confirmed in the Dubai Exhibition Centre yet, the calendar is gradually filling. Vorster collaborates with international organizers to stage events such as the 20th Cityscape Global 2020, The World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) in 2020, BlockExpo and World Blockchain Summit 2020 or the inaugural Games Con 2021. "At Expo 2020 you can be fully connected. With the maximized use of technology, we will showcase what cities can do in the future," Jakobsen recently emphasized at IBTM World in Barcelona. Shaun Vorster: Expo 2020 will be a global convener that will spur business and trade.

"With the aim of hosting one of the most sustainable World Expos ever, sustainability has been a core tenet, integrated into all aspects of delivering Expo 2020," said Vorster. This includes producing clean energy through renewable resources, while reducing overall consumption of energy by outperforming construction industry standards in areas such as exterior lighting and building efficiency. Water consumption will be reduced by methods such as smart controls for metering and irrigation. More than 100 buildings are on track to achieve LEED Gold certification. Vorster: "Expo 2020’s focus on Sustainability extends beyond event-time operations. More than 80 per cent of Expo 2020’s built environment will be re-purposed after the event closes its doors in 2021, forming a brand-new city – a mixed-use innovation ecosystem called District 2020."

Vorster is confident that world expos are not a dying species. "Each World Expo is relevant to the era in which it is hosted. The world is entering the cusp of the fourth industrial revolution with technological advances such as automation, AI and blockchain redefining how we live and work. At the same time, as a global community, we face unprecedented challenges and new opportunities to create a better world. Given the interdependence and complexity of these challenges and opportunities, collaboration is crucial, which is why Expo 2020 is being organized under the theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’. No message can be more powerful and relevant today than the one of partnership and cooperation across traditional disciplinary, geographic and digital boundaries."
