I love my job

he first two-and-a-half months of the year have already passed, but statistics show that I would be paid for my work only from March 18 of this year if I were to receive the same salary as my male counterpart in Germany. So, until that day in March, I worked for free! That's what Equal Pay Day is all about; its intention is to vividly demonstrate the difference in pay for men and women.

We're still a very long time from achieving economic equality between men and women in terms of salary – 170 years to be more precise. That's the number stated by the World Economic Forum in its "Gender Gap Report"; and in doing so demonstrating that the differences in the 144 surveyed countries are at their highest since 2008. However, there are two major social trends in opposition to this development: demographic change and diversity. The challenges inherent to these trends can very simply not be accomplished without women.

On the occasion of the International Women's Day, we joined forces with our affiliate magazine m+a report and IMEX to conduct a survey on women in the event industry and hit a lot of women's raw nerve. 578 answered in German, 331 in English. And what do you know: two out of three women love their job! Their love is not lessened by the fact that only three out of ten women feel they've been treated equally to their male colleagues when it comes to salary and only four out of ten believe that their prospects of career are identical. It appears as if career opportunities are less influenced by skills and abilities as much more by work interruptions due to maternity and lack of selfconfidence. " Women seem to shy from taking risks and fail to assert themselves and their skills. That needs to be changed", wrote one respondent. But how?

Carina Bauer, CEO IMEX Group, Christiane Appel, editor-in-chief m+a report and I as initiators of the survey want to find the answers together with you. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all participants and promise to uphold our focus on this issue. A first opportunity is the Pink hour@IMEX on May 17, at 16:00 at the tw tagungswirtschaft stand G180. Please bring along a pink accessory, your ideas and issues.
